Travel 101: The Ultimate Itinerary for 2 Weeks in Central America

Central America, the relatively narrow strip connecting North and South America, is a string of countries and landscapes that offers some of the most rewarding travel in this hemisphere. From perfect beach days in Belize to epic Costa Rican eco adventures, here is an ideal two-week itinerary for exploring the very best of the region. And any one of these stops would make for an amazing last-minute vacation.

Best Time to Visit

December to April: In the dry season, you'll find the region warm, sunny, and much less rainy than other times of year. The best Central America vacation deals are more likely to be found in the less popular time to visit — the wet season from May to October.

Visas and Border Crossings

Central America is a relatively easy region to travel. Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama have pretty generous visa-free stay periods — certainly more than sufficient for this itinerary. You can move freely between El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala for up to 90 days without a visa or requiring a border check if crossing borders by land.

The region is not always the most politically stable, and some areas can be troubled by crime. Check with the US State Department for any travel advisories when planning your trip.

Budget & Currency

The US dollar is widely accepted across Central America. In Panama and El Salvador, it is legal tender. A pegged exchange rate (BZD 2 to USD 1) makes Belize very dollar-friendly. You're better off changing USD for local currency in the other countries, though USD is typically widely accepted in areas that receive a lot of foreign visitors. But be prepared to get change in local currency.

Budget-wise, USD 120 per day will cover all but the most luxurious requirements. Many travelers successfully navigate Central America for USD 50 per day. And outside Belize and Costa Rica, USD 30 per day is not unrealistic.

Belize

For some of the best beaches and relaxed restaurants, head to Placencia, home of some of the best last-minute vacation deals in Central America.

What to See

Head inland to the Maya King Waterfalls for one of the most beautiful sights in Belize. And take a diving or snorkeling excursion along the Belize Barrier Reef, or go on a Whale Shark watching expedition (the optimal season for this is March to June). 

Guatemala

Where to Stay/Eat

There are 11 towns around the beautiful Lake Atitlán. Take your pick, from San Pedro — the party town — to colorful, artsy San Juan. But for breathtaking views and a somewhat more relaxed vibe, make the trek up to Santa Cruz — one of the most stunning places in the world to sip a cool drink and watch the world go by.

What to Do

At Lake Atitlán, you can shop in the local towns, explore local Mayan culture, hike a volcano, or kayak on the lake.

El Salvador

Where to Stay/Eat

El Tunco is a famous surfing spot, a must-see for first-time visitors to El Salvador. It's also one of the best places to try one of the country's favorite foods, pupusas.

What to See

El Tunco is ideal for surfing and sunsets. If you want to explore, follow the coastal Highway 2 for a tour of some local beaches and byways. Or point inland and visit the picturesque Tamanique Waterfalls.

Honduras

Where to Stay/Eat

Roatan Island is one of the underrated gems of Central America. Wherever you stay, don't leave Honduras without trying baleadas, the local street food.

What to See

Roatan offers world-class diving and snorkeling along its barrier reef. There is also a popular sloth sanctuary to visit.

Nicaragua

Where to Stay/Eat

The beautiful historic city of Granada is a little smaller than Managua and Leon (more popular destinations for Central America vacation packages). Explore the colorful, bustling municipal market. It's open all day, but food tends to be freshest in the morning.

What to See

Take a boat ride to nearby islands, hike the local volcano, or kayak on Lake Nicaragua.

Costa Rica

Where to Stay/Eat

Puerto Jiménez is the gateway to Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula and some of the country's most extraordinary landscapes. Enjoy the local breakfast favorite, Gallo Pinto, at least once.

What to See

Corcovado National Park is an immense, magical nature reserve where you'll find rainforest, beaches, and wildlife.

Panama

Panama City's historic quarter, Casco Viejo. Explore the local fish markets for fresh ceviche.
