Travel 101: The Ultimate Itinerary for 10 Days in Portugal

Portugal is a prime travel destination. Whether it's through heat-of-the-moment, last-minute vacation package deals or a minutely-planned bucket-list adventure, the country has some of Europe's most popular sights and outstanding areas of natural beauty. It's not possible to see everything the country has to offer in 10 days, but this itinerary demonstrates you can have a lot of fun trying.

Day 1: Lisbon

The vibrant nightlife, mouthwatering cuisine, historic splendor, and natural beauty of the City of Light make it one of the most popular destinations for European vacation packages. Highlights include the awe-inspiring Jerónimos Monastery and Lisbon's famous custard tarts, Pastéis de Belém.

Insider tip: Pastéis de Belém are the most famous Portuguese convent pastries. From Dom Rodrigo sweets in Lagos to the northern delicacy Pudim Abade de Priscos, towns and regions all over the country have unique confections connected by a common ingredient: egg yolks. Almost all of them owe their existence to inventive monks and nuns, who historically used egg whites to starch their clothes and needed ways to use up vast quantities of leftover yolks.

Day 2: Sintra

About 20 miles west of Lisbon, historic Sintra is one of Portugal's must-see sights. Explore stunning gardens and some of the town's lesser-known historic marvels, like Palácio Biester, then visit the stunning Palácio da Pena, one of the crowning achievements of Romantic architecture. 

Day 3: Nazaré

Too often overlooked by Europe vacation package deals, Nazaré is one of the world's most famous surfing spots. Head to North Beach to see some of the largest waves in the world and the surfers who ride them.

Day 4: Porto

Head north for Porto and a relaxing lunchtime cruise under its six iconic bridges. Take a late-afternoon tour of one of Porto's famous port cellars, or head to the Mercado do Bolhão for an abundant array of food and drink options.

Day 5: Braga

The compact northern city of Braga is crammed with historic and architectural jewels. Start by climbing the 582 steps of the must-see Santuário do Bom Jesus, then explore some of southern Europe's most exquisite churches and municipal parks.

Day 6: Douro Valley

Heading back south from Braga, pass by the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. Stop for wine tasting in the village of Pinhão and a serene cruise along the Douro River in a traditional Rabelo.

Day 7: Parque Natural de Serra Estrela

Last-minute vacations to Portugal understandably tend to focus on the big cities and historic sites, but the country also has incredible areas of natural beauty. Mountainous Serra da Estrela Natural Park is Portugal's largest protected area. It offers stunning rocky landscapes, skiing in winter, and a famous sheep's milk cheese, Queijo da Serra. 

Day 8: Évora

There aren't many cities in the world where you can see a Roman temple, a chapel of bones, and one of Europe's largest Gothic cathedrals. Historic Évora is a standout feature of many Portugal vacation packages.

Day 9: Faro

Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is a gateway to some of the most beautiful beaches. Its cobbled streets, ancient cathedrals, and medieval artifacts make it a true historic treasure.

Day 10: Algarve Beach Day

After nine straight days touring Portugal from top to bottom, it's time to relax on one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe.
