Top 5 Things to Do in Puerto Rico
May 4, 2026 - Vacations - by Sylvia Lee
When I need a getaway to a place with palm trees, Caribbean sun, and cobblestone streets, Puerto Rico comes to mind instantly. The island offers something for every style of traveler, from centuries-old fortresses to postcard-worthy beaches. With a shifting landscape of rugged cliffs, tropical rainforests, and colonial architecture, first-time visitors are often overwhelmed by everything this location has to offer. That’s why I always make sure to include these can’t-miss activities in my itinerary before searching for the best Puerto Rico vacation deals.
1. Explore Old San Juan
Founded in 1521, Old San Juan is officially the oldest U.S. city with plenty of history and culture to go around. Its twisty, narrow lanes are perfect for exploring by foot, providing quick access to hidden plazas, courtyards, and various landmarks. Take in the panoramic ocean view from the walls of Castillo San Felipe de Morro, browse the shops along Calle Fortaleza, and end the day with a cocktail on a breezy restaurant patio.
2. Take the Bacardi Distillery Tour
The well-known Bacardi brand produces over 85% of its famous rum in Puerto Rico, and tourists can get a behind-the-scenes look at Casa Bacardi in Cataño. The basic tour explores the tropical campus grounds and covers the history of the Bacardi family. For a premium experience, consider taking a mixology class led by a world-class rum expert. As one of the most popular activities for tourists, the distillery tour usually sells out each day. Therefore, booking in advance is highly recommended.
3. Enjoy the Beach
No trip to Puerto Rico feels complete without a day of swimming, surfing, or tanning on the beach. The island’s coastline offers everything from lively city shores to quiet stretches of powdery sand. Near San Juan, Condado Beach, Escambron Beach, or Isla Verde Beach are beloved among tourists and locals alike. Farther east, Flamenco Beach is famous for its crescent-shaped shoreline and remarkably clear water.
4. Visit El Yunque National Forest
For breathtaking, natural beauty, make the drive out to El Yunque National Forest. Explore a network of hiking trails winding through dense palm groves, discovering hidden swimming holes and waterfalls along the way. Embark on an ATV tour through the jungle, or get a bird’s-eye view of the forest as you zipline through the canopy. With over 29,000 acres of terrain, visitors can easily spend an entire day or two immersed in the sights and sounds of this rainforest.
5. Go Snorkeling in Culebra
Some of the best Puerto Rico vacation deals include snorkeling packages, and there’s no better place for snorkeling than Culebra. Visitors to the small island can take advantage of the clear water and plentiful gear rental shops to view coral formations, tropical fish, and sea turtles. To make it an unforgettable day, spring for a guided tour to the local hotspots that aren’t immediately accessible from the shore.
Experience Puerto Rico
For travelers looking for culture, adventure, and natural beauty all in one destination, Puerto Rico continues to stand out as a top Caribbean vacation destination.
