Travel 101: The Ultimate Itinerary for 10 Days in Costa Rica
March 18, 2026 - Vacations - by Abigal Ford
Are you ready for rainforests, reefs, and volcanoes framed by misty skies? Ten days in Costa Rica is just enough time to experience the country’s most iconic landscapes while uncovering local secrets many travelers miss. Here’s your ultimate itinerary packed with adventure, relaxation, and insider tips. Plus, we have some of the best Central America vacation deals out there.
Day 1-2: San José and Poás Volcano
Arrive in San José and spend your first day adjusting to the time zone and culture shift. A day of acclimation will also save your itinerary if your flight gets delayed. Once you’re well-rested, visit the Central Market for handmade souvenirs and fresh fruit smoothies, then explore Barrio Escalante for your first taste of Costa Rican cuisine.
On day two, take a day trip to Poás Volcano National Park. It’s only an hour's drive, and renting a car for your entire trip may be helpful. At the park, you can peer into one of the world’s largest active craters. Get there early since clouds often roll in by midmorning and may obscure the view.
Day 3-4: La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano
Wake up before the sun and drive to La Fortuna, the adventure capital of Costa Rica. Here, you have plenty of options. You can:
- Hike through Arenal Volcano National Park
- Relax in natural hot springs
- Zip-line above the rainforest canopy
For a less crowded experience, visit Eco Termales Hot Springs. This spot is owned by a local family who limits entry to 100 guests at a time. Whatever you do, don’t miss the El Salto Rope Swing, a free local swimming hole just outside of town. It’s a favorite hangout for residents and is far less touristy than the resort pools.
Day 5-6: Monteverde Cloud Forest
Journey up winding roads to Monteverde, home to one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. No Costa Rica vacation package is complete without a trip to this cloud forest. The drive is half the fun, which is great news because it’ll take you over three hours. Walk the hanging bridges at Selvatura Park, or join a nighttime wildlife tour to spot glowing fungi and tiny, adorable glass frogs.
Bring a light rain jacket, even in the dry season, and try to stay at a lodge that supports reforestation efforts; Monteverde’s community has planted over a million trees in the past decade.
Day 7-8: Manuel Antonio National Park
Head down to the Pacific coast for two days of beach bliss at Manuel Antonio National Park. This may be the best part of your Costa Rica tour. The park blends jungle hikes with pristine beaches. Try to arrive early to spot monkeys, sloths, and iguanas before the midday crowds.
Day 9-10: Uvita and Marino Ballena National Park
End your trip in Uvita, where fewer tourists go, even though it’s only an hour’s drive from Manuel Antonio. Here, you can visit Marino Ballena National Park, named for its sandbar shaped like a whale’s tail, which is visible only at low tide. From December to April and July to October, humpback whales migrate here.
