Pet Friendly Cruises: Cruises You Can Take Your Dog On
April 3, 2026 - Cruises - by Megan Morrow
Looking for last-minute cruise deals might be easier than you think, as more cruise lines cater to spur-of-the-moment travelers. Likewise, travelers today have more pet-friendly getaway options than ever, as more resorts and locations seek to cater to both humans and their favorite animals. If you're seeking pet-friendly cruises, on the other hand, you may discover these unique travel options are harder to find.
If you simply can't leave home without your favorite canine or feline companion, however, you are still in luck. There are a few last-minute cruise deals that feature pet-friendly getaways, so you can bring man or woman's best friend along for the ride--or sail.
All Aboard the Cunard Queen Mary 2
A luxury ocean liner, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 or QM2 is known for its elegance, craftsmanship, and its kennels.
Cats and dogs on board enjoy air-conditioned kennels, life jackets for the cruise, and a fitted coat to "take home as a memento of their voyage." They also have free access to a deck space where they can run and play, plus a "New York fire hydrant and a Liverpool lamp post, providing a dedicated space where pets can relieve themselves when nature calls."
The pet-loving staff of the Queen Mary 2 will reach out ahead of your cruise to ensure your favorite four-legged friend dines as well as you do: You can choose to feed your pets, or the kennel master will offer up freshly cooked chicken, vegetables, broth, and more.
And the memories will stay with you, thanks to a complimentary pet portrait session, featuring props such as a life ring and jacket and miniature bellhop hat.
Kennels are available on transatlantic crossings sailing to or from New York, Southampton, England, or Hamburg, Germany. Not surprisingly, these pet-friendly cruises are very popular. Aim to book at least one year in advance.
Putting the Bark in Embark
While the Queen Mary is the only mainstream ship with permanent kennels for transatlantic journeys, you can also check out special dog-friendly voyages from Cruise Tails.
Available for 250 dogs and their lucky owners, the upcoming inaugural cruise will feature one week of pet butlers, splash zones, costume parties, dancing, prancing, and more.
Margaritaville at Sea is partnering with Cruise Tails and sailing out of Tampa, Florida.
Cruise or Ferry the European Seas
Some operators in Europe permit pets to stay in your cabin on certain canal boats or river cruises.
Brittany Ferries, for instance, offers pet-friendly travel for overnight routes, although pets are not allowed in most public areas. Viking Line also allows pets on regular voyages, excluding cruises.
As with any last-minute cruise or overseas trip, it pays to do your homework ahead of time so you're sure that your pet will be welcome.
Pet Policies from Major Cruise Lines
Many cruise lines accept certified service animals, but do not permit emotional support animals to get on board.

If you love to see the world by ship and sea, you might want to envision what a trip would be like with a pet. Regardless, there are many pet-friendly getaways and last-minute cruises to satisfy all of your travel goals.
