An Unlikely Boost to Mexico Tourism
posted on 02/19/2012 via TravelAgeWest.com
Who would’ve thought that the Apocalypse would boost tourism?! Whether or not you believe claims that December 21, 2012 means game over for mankind, the hype behind this scenario continues to grow as the big day gets closer. (I blame John Cusack, personally). The doomsday theory is centered around the fact that the Maya’s Long Count calendar, which began in 3114 B.C., ends on December 21st.

Most Mexican archaeological authorities say that this simply marks the end of a cycle in the Mayan calendar and not the end of the world. No matter what side of the debate you fall on, one thing is certain – 2012 is quite the year to visit Mexico’s Maya world.

The Mexican government is taking this opportunity to promote tourism to Mexico’s Maya world, which includes the southern Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Campeche and Chiapas. Approximately 500 Maya-themed events will be held in Southern Mexico throughout the year, and the city of Tapachula has gone so far as to install an 8-ft digital clock counting down to December 21st.

Overall, if December 21, 2012 is not the Apocalypse, then it is at the very least a prime time to visit Mexico’s Maya World… and if 2012 is the end of the world? Well, in that case, thanks for the heads up, John!
